Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: An SEO Guide for Small Businesses in India

How Google AI Mode and AI Overviews pick the sites they link to, what Google officially says, and a practical SEO checklist for Indian small businesses.

Short answer: Google says there is no special trick for AI Mode or AI Overviews. To be shown as a link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and the same SEO basics apply: crawlable pages, clear text, good internal links, structured data that matches the page, and an up-to-date Business Profile. What changes is the kind of content that wins: specific, detailed answers to longer questions, written by someone who actually does the work.

What AI Mode and AI Overviews are

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some Google results, with links to the pages they draw from. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search tab where people ask longer questions and follow-ups, and get an AI answer with links.

Both matter a lot in India. AI Mode first came to India in English and then Hindi; in October 2025 Google added Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu, according to the Google India blog. In the same announcement Google launched Search Live, which lets people talk to Search and point their camera at things, with India as the first country after the US to get it. Google also noted that India has its largest user base for voice and visual search, and that people ask AI Mode questions nearly three times longer than in traditional search.

For a local business, that means more customers asking full questions such as "which clinic software works offline and handles GST bills" or "best interior designer in Bareilly for a 2BHK under ₹5 lakh", often in Hindi or another Indian language.

What Google officially says

Google's Search Central page on AI features and your website is the most reliable guide. The key points:

  • No extra requirements. There are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. You do not need new AI text files, special markup or special schema.
  • Eligibility: the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
  • Query fan-out: these features may run several related searches across subtopics to build an answer, which is why they can link to a wider range of pages than a classic result.
  • Reporting: traffic from AI features is counted in the Search Console Performance report under the "Web" search type. There is no separate AI Mode report.
  • Controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit what Google can show from a page, and noindex removes it from Search.

Be careful with tools or agencies that promise a secret "AI SEO" format. Google's own documentation does not support that.

Why query fan-out favours specific pages

When someone asks AI Mode a long question, Google breaks it into smaller searches: features, price range, location, reviews, comparisons. A page that clearly answers one of those sub-questions can be cited even if it would not rank first for the head keyword.

So instead of one thin "Services" page, a small business does better with focused pages and posts that each answer one real question: price ranges, timelines, a comparison, a checklist, a local service page. This is the same topic-cluster approach we use on this site, where each solution page links to its buyer guides and back.

A practical checklist for Indian small businesses

1. Get the technical basics right

  • Allow Googlebot in robots.txt and make sure your hosting firewall or CDN is not blocking it.
  • Keep important content as real text, not only inside images, PDFs or sliders.
  • Fast pages that work well on mobile. Most Indian searches happen on phones, often on slower connections.
  • Verify the site in Search Console and fix indexing errors. Our technical SEO checklist for a new website covers the full list.

2. Answer real questions, early and plainly

  • Start each page with a two to three line answer, then the detail. AI answers pull from passages that are clear on their own.
  • Use H2 and H3 headings that match how people ask: "How much does it cost?", "How long does it take?", "Which is better, X or Y?"
  • Give concrete numbers you can stand behind: price ranges, timelines, service areas, hours.
  • Add an FAQ section where it helps, using questions you hear from customers on calls and WhatsApp.

3. Show first-hand experience

Generic content is easy for AI to summarise without needing to link to you. Content that only you can write is not: case studies with real problems and outcomes, photos of your own work, your process, and what goes wrong in practice. Name the author and show their experience.

4. Keep local signals consistent

Google's guidance specifically mentions keeping Business Profile information up to date. Make sure your name, address, phone and hours match across your website, Google Business Profile and directories, and keep getting and answering reviews. Our local SEO guide for India goes deeper.

5. Use structured data that matches the page

Schema for your organisation, local business, products, articles and FAQs helps Google understand the page. It must match what visitors can see. Do not mark up reviews or prices that are not on the page.

6. Write in the language your customers search in

With AI Mode now in Hindi and several other Indian languages, a well-made Hindi or regional-language page for your main service can reach customers your English page misses. Translate properly, do not just run a machine translation and publish it.

How to measure the impact

  • In Search Console, compare impressions and clicks for informational queries over time. Rising impressions with flat clicks often means answers are shown on the results page.
  • In Google Analytics, track enquiries, calls and WhatsApp clicks, not just sessions. Google says clicks from pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, so conversions are the better measure.
  • Ask new leads how they found you. "I searched on Google and it suggested you" is worth logging.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Publishing dozens of AI-written posts with no real experience in them.
  • Blocking Googlebot by accident in a security plugin or CDN setting.
  • Hiding prices, service areas and contact details, which are exactly what people ask AI Mode about.
  • Stopping SEO because "AI will take all the clicks". People still click when they are ready to buy or call.
